Sotheby’s offer 126 art lots in their Fine Asian, Australian and European Arts and Design Auction of 21 July in Sydney. The first 56 works are from the Minter Ellison collection – they are put up for sale because the law firm is moving its Sydney offices.
Among the photographic offerings are a very good selection by modernist photographer Max Dupain, and contemporary photographers Bill Henson, Rosemary Laing, Simryn Gill, Tracey Moffatt and Patricia Piccinini, but also paintings by Adam Cullen and David Jolley and a marble sculpture by Akio Makigawa.
Sotheby’s Australia chairman Geoffrey Smith points out that the work in the Minter Ellison collection has been given “very conservative” estimates considering the critical standing of the artists (AFR, 1 July 2015).
