The Gerald Fitzgerald painting, Manly Jetty 1896, reached an impressive $ 42,500 at auction on Thursday night. The sale exceeded all expectations. The impressionistic work was expected to reach from $ 22,000 to $ 28,000.
Banziger Hulme’s David Hulme said: “It’s a wonderful picture. It is unusual in this climate for a painting to reach this much higher than anticipated (price). People will pay for quality art.”
When announcing lot 34, head auctioneer Martin Farrah pointed out the painting’s recent exposure in the Manly Daily.
