The Menzies auction on 1 December in Sydney marks the start of summer, and suitably, the first three offerings of the 123 lots are dedicated to the bounty of nature: a majestic Namatjira gum tree opens the sale, followed by an Ellis Rowan flora and fauna close-up and then an exuberant Nora Heysen floral still life.
The selection contains exquisite examples by many of Australia’s most beloved artists, from Rupert Bunny to Arthur Streeton, on to Fred Williams, Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan, Charles Blackman and Brett Whiteley, to Grace Cossington Smith, Margaret Olley, Rosalie Gascoigne and Emily Kngwarreye to name just few. At the contemporary end of the spectrum, works by Ben Quilty, Paul Ryan, CJ Hendry and Ildiko Kovacs stand out.
So if you are looking for a Christmas present for yourself or a loved one that will endure into the future, this might just be the place for you.
Enjoy the preview in Melbourne from 18 to 21 November at 1 Darling Street, South Yarra, and in Sydney from 25 to 30 November at 12 Todman Avenue, Kensington.
The auction will be held on Wednesday, 1 December, 6.30 pm, at 12 Todman Avenue.
