Arts journalist Elizabeth Fortescue looks back on an eventful year in the fine art auction room. It saw several auction records, but records do not define a market.
For a closer look, she spoke with several art market specialists, including our very own David Hulme.
Fortescue writes in her report on 12 December 2024: “David Hulme of Banziger Hulme Fine Art Consultants in Manly believes fallen clearance rates indicate that price expectations for art at auction need to be adjusted down.
At the high end of the market, however, the old dowager continues to bestow her benevolence with high prices for artists at the top of the cultural pyramid”.
