For this edition of Dave’s Faves, David is looking at the 69 lots from Sotheby’s Australia’s 20th November sale in Melbourne. Brigitte is making her selection from Bonham’s Sydney sale of their 53 offerings on 19th November.
First off are Brigitte’s Best from Bonhams:
Lot 3 – Donald Friend, The Accident, est. $1,500-2,500. Hope you’re insured
Lot 11 – Georges Ricard-Cordingley (French, 1873-1939), Sydney Harbour, 1910,
est. $40,000-50,000. La Côte d’Azur? Non, mesdames et messieurs, Sydney!
Lot 14 – Norman Lindsay, Adventure 1994, est. $100,000-150,000. For once, eye candy for ladies, too
Lot 16 – Arthur Streeton, Seaside Pastoral c 1921, est. $150,000-200,000. Take me there right now
Lot 17 – Walter Withers, Panning for Gold 1893. Better chance here than with Oz Lotto,
I suppose
Lot 23 – Robert Dickerson, Woman at Bondi Beach 1996, est. $45,000-55,000. Bracing Bondi Beach
Lot 26 – Tom Roberts, La Favorita c1889, est. $350,000-450,000. Guess what: this exquisite
9 x 5 is my favourite, too
29 – Frederick McCubbin, Shelling Peas c1913, est. $600,000-800,000. The Zen of Domesticity
30 – Eugene von Guerard, Mountainous Landscape early 1840s, est. $50,000-70,000.
This reminds me so much of Switzerland (with a nod to Alexandre Calame)
Lot 31 – Emanuel Phillips Fox, Autumn, 1889, est. $500,000-700,000. Is she going to kick those leaves or what?
Lot 41 – John Peter Russell, Swiss Scene 1913, est. $3,000-5,000. A Swiss chalet you can afford
Lot 46 – Frances Hodgkins, Boy on a Chair, est. $18,000-25,000. Beautiful Boy
Dave’s Faves from Sotheby’s are:
Lot 2 – Michael Zavros, Hunter 2007, est. $15,000-20,000. Perhaps one of Zavros’ best paintings
Lot 3 – Dale Frank, New Harbour Cox Bight 2005, est. $20,000-30,000. Ditto lot 2 and will also require a big wall
Lot 10 – John Brack, Flowering Gum 1958, est. $120,000-160,000. 50s Brack – now that’s where it’s at!
Lot 20 – Arthur Boyd, Near Bendigo 1951, est. $90,000-120,000. A delightful early work by Boyd and priced to sell
Lot 21 – Sidney Nolan, Ned Kelly: Crossing the River 1955, est. $800,000-1,200,000. One for the Trophy Cabinet surely
Lot 23 – Noel McKenna, Big Murray Cod, Wagga Wagga NSW 2004, est. $8,000-12,000. Everything that I like about McKenna’s work is in this painting
Lot 30 – Arthur Streeton, Palm Beach and Barrenjoey (1926), est. $80,000-100,000. Timeless Beauty in Streeton Blue
Lot 53 – Tom Roberts, Kallista Landscape (1925), est. $40,000-50,000. Late but still great – majestic landscape
Lot 56 – Frederick McCubbin, Little Dock, Yarra River, Melbourne, est. $20,000-30,000. This diminutive work packs a huge punch

Lot 63 – Donald Friend, The Arrival of the First Rabbit, est. $15,000-25,000. Friend nails it once again
Lot 66 – Cyril E. Power, The Tube Staircase (1929), est. $22,000-28,000. Watch this flight of stairs take off
