In their Spring sale on 16 November in Sydney, Smith and Singer present 78 lots of Important Australian and International Art, and as is almost de rigueur these days, the first 5 lots are dedicated to women artists of the early 20th century: Clarice Beckett with two atmospheric Victorian views, Kathleen O’Connor with a leisurely Luxembourg Garden scene, Hilda Rix Nicholas with a mysterious middle Eastern impression and Ethel Carrick with a lively Tunisian market scene.
Not one, but four Lin Onus gouaches should give collectors plenty of opportunity to catch at least one fish.
A number of iconic paintings by Jeffrey Smart (think road signs) and Charles Blackman (school girls) as well as Robert Klippel sculptures are on offer among the many treasures ranging from colonial to contemporary in this $7.5 million to $10.3 million dollar sale.
However, a painting by Brett Whiteley and one by Arthur Streeton are the stand-outs: Streeton’s “Evening, Venice” from 1908 (lot 28) will have everyone pining for La Serenissma, while lot 24 is a classic Whiteley of a “Dove in the Mango Tree”, 1984 – just in time for summer.
The last lot bookending the sale gives us more iconic imagery: Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly, in the set of 16 colour screenprints from 1971.
The Melbourne preview is on from 3 to 7 November at 14-16 Collins Street.
